Some are longtime favorites while others have only recently opened their doors. All of these pizzerias, however, are dishing up pies we think you'll love.
Sawmill Cafe, Seaside Heights : Sawmill opened as a hot dog stand on the boardwalk in 1977 and has since developed in a full family-friendly restaurant and taproom that claims to serve the “best and the biggest” pies in Jersey.
Denino’s South Pizzeria, Brick Township : Several Daily Voice readers said Denino's is a favorite. The family hails from Sicily and opened the first location in 1937. In 2010, a second Denino's opened in Staten Island. Now, there are four locations -- with two in New Jersey, Manahawkin and Brick.
Mangia Brick Oven Pizza, Jackson Township and Toms River : While gourmet brick oven pizza is the star of the show at Mangia, you’ll also find countless traditional Italian pasta dishes, calzones, paninis and other savory entrees.
Maruca’s Tomato Pies, Seaside Heights : Maruca’s, which was featured on food series “Man Vs. Food,” is renowned for its famous tomato pies - so much so that they’ve started shipping them around the country. The boardwalk joint has been in business since 1950 and has a massive fanbase.
Mellow Mushroom, Toms River : Mellow Mushroom’s self-described “boardwalk-inspired” stone-baked pies can be customized, but one major hit is the house special: red sauce loaded with mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham, applewood smoked bacon, mushrooms, black olives, roma tomatoes, green peppers, onions and a final layer of mozzarella.
Pies On Nine, Beachwood : Serving up gourmet pies topped with authentic Italian sauces, meats and cheeses has helped to keep Pies On Nine one step ahead of the Ocean County pizza competition.
Merendino’s Pizza & Ristorante, Ocean Township : Merendino’s is all about variety, offering Sicilian, Grandma and Gourmet-style pizzas with your choice of fresh toppings.
Bacoli Pizza, Lakewood Township : Like some of the best spots on our list, Bacoli specializes in all things Italian. Gourmet pies options include the eggplant parm, chicken caesar and baked ziti.
Rosie’s Pizza, Point Pleasant Beach : At Rosie’s, you’ll find both square and round “artisan” pies, and each can be piled high with unique toppings like vinegar peppers, anchovies, artichoke hearts and more.
Charlie’s Pizza, Lakewood Township : Finally, you can’t go wrong at Charlie’s, which offers one of the largest varieties of gourmet pies on our list. The menu also features countless Italian pasta dishes and homemade specialties.
